Competition / 20+10+X Architecture Awards 3rd Cycle / World Architecture Community
WA is an "online community" initiated by Suha ?zkan and 200+ invited Honorary Members, and a growing number of registered members (3500 in October).
Awarding follows a most democratic procedure where all member's ratings and the votes of all Honorary Members are effective in the final decisions.
Registrations are completely FREE so that all architects can participate both as candidates and judges.
Eligibility:
Architects from ALL countries can submit ALL of their buildings (realized or not) for the appreciation of the WA Community. Recent projects (not older than 10 years) will have more chances to be shortlisted for the Awards. Students, landscape architects, engineers may also submit for the awards projects they are the author of: we do not check or accredit diplomas.
Projects submitted to the WA Portal between 25 October 2008 - 23 January 2009 will be considered for the 3rd Cycle. All projects submitted earlier can be reconsidered if their pages are updated with significant new material by their architects.
Criteria for Recognition:
NOVELTY; ORIGINALITY, and CREATIVITY in design that reflect and inspire a commitment to the art of architecture are the major criteria. The WA Portal tries to bridge the gap between theory and practice: thus the architect's explanations and member's discussions on submissions will be critical for recognition as much as the design itself.

Gensler African American Internship and Scholarship (GAAINS)
Each year, less than 150 African American students receive accredited degrees in architecture in the United States. Gensler is committed to the value of diversity within our firm and the design industry, and has seen a critical need to support the education and mentorship of this community of design talent.
The GAAINS program champions these values, annually awarding two African-American students from NAAB-accredited architecture programs between $5,000 and $10,000 for their final year of academic study. A summer internship opportunity will also be awarded to the top scholarship winner.
For more information, or to download scholarship materials, please visit: http://gensler.com/#aboutus/careers/internships
Semester in Detroit program brings U-M students to the Motor City
U-M started in downtown Detroit in 1817 before moving to Ann Arbor. A dozen of the university's students will come back to the Motor City this winter to participate in the Semester in Detroit program.
The students will shack up at Wayne State University's dorms and take classes at U-M's Detroit Center at the northwest corner of Woodward Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard. They will also have the option of taking classes at Wayne State and interning at a number of Detroit's community and cultural arts organizations.
The new program is part of an effort to get the state's three major research universities (U-M, WSU and Michigan State University) to connect and collaborate with each other. It's modeled after U-M's Semester in Washington, D.C., program, which is designed to take students out of U-M's environment and immerse them in another culture for a semester.
Among the courses featured in the program are the Core Urban Planning, a part-time community-based internship and elective courses in the university's School of Art and Design called "Detroit Connections."
For information on the program, contact Craig Regester at regester@umich.edu or (313) 505-5185.
